Surrogacy is an arrangement between a woman and a couple or an individual to carry and deliver a baby. Surrogacy is often opted for when a woman/couple is unable to conceive due to a missing or abnormal uterus, have experienced multiple pregnancy losses, or have had multiple failed In-Vitro Fertilisation attempts. The surrogacy arrangement may be made through an agency or contracted privately.

Surrogacy may be traditional (where the surrogate mother acts both as an egg donor as well as the carrier, and she is impregnated with semen from the intended parents or a sperm donor) or gestational (where the surrogate becomes pregnant through IVF procedure using eggs of the potential mother/egg donor and sperms of the intended father/sperm donor). The advantage of gestational surrogacy to the parents is that the embryo may be created from the woman’s egg and the man’s sperm, so it can be biologically theirs.

Surrogacy may prove to be the best solution to parenthood if below problems are coming in the way of your pregnancy:

  • Previously failed IVF treatment
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Failed embryo implantation treatment
  • Absence or malformation of the womb
  • Hysterectomy or a pelvic disorder
  • Absence of or an impaired uterus
  • Dangerous heart condition, liver disease or high blood pressure, or any other medical condition that would make a likely pregnancy a serious health risk for the woman
